Why Self-Accountability Matters
SPEAKER_00Hi everyone, I'm Corinne Forsythe, Head of Property Management at Ray White Beanley. I've been in real estate for about 17 years now, across property management, business development, sales, and leadership. Over that time, one thing has become really clear to me. Success in this industry isn't just about knowledge or systems, it's about accountability. And not the kind that comes from your boss checking in or your business owner setting deadlines. I'm talking about self-accountability. When you learn to be your own accountability partner, you stop waiting for someone else to keep you on track and you start leading yourself. That's when confidence, consistency, and growth really takes off. So today, I want to talk to you about what it means to be your own accountability partner, how to hold yourself to your own standards, how to show up with intention, and how to take real ownership of your career. Property management is fast-paced and unpredictable. There's always noise. Phone calls, emails, maintenance, tenants, owners, and deadlines. And if you don't anchor yourself with structure and accountability, it's easy for the day to run you instead of you running the day. Accountability gives you control back. It's not about guilt or perfection, it's about ownership. It's asking, did I do what I said I'd do? Did I show up the way that I wanted to? That simple check-in keeps you focused and honest. When things go right, accountability lets you celebrate the part you played. When things go wrong, it helps you ask, what can I do differently next time? It's a mindset of empowerment, not lame. And the more that you practice it, the more self-trust you build. Because every time you follow through on something you said you do, you prove to yourself that you can rely on you. Confidence doesn't come from knowing everything, it comes from keeping promises to yourself, even on the hard days. That's real accountability. Now, let's talk about career growth. Yes, your leader or business owner should help you grow. They should offer training, feedback, and opportunities to upskill. But the reality is, not every business has a perfect structure for that. Sometimes your leader is busy. Sometimes budgets are tight, and sometimes those opportunities just don't exist yet. So here's the truth: Upskilling from your leader is a luxury, not a guarantee. If you want to grow, you have to take charge of it yourself. That means listening to podcasts, reading books, attending webinars, showing up at coffees and conversations, or reaching out to people in the industry who inspire you. Don't wait for someone to hand you a career plan. Go out and build one. When I stepped into leadership, there wasn't a roadmap. So I learned through trial and error and curiosity. I asked questions, sought mentors, and found tools that worked for me. That's what accountability looks like: taking ownership of your own learning. And here's the thing: when you do that, people notice. Leaders love working with people who take initiative. It shows drive, maturity, and self-awareness. So if you've been waiting for someone to create a growth path for you, stop waiting and start learning. Even 10 minutes a week of intentional development adds up. Accountability isn't just about what you do, it's about how you show up. Your attitude, your presentation, your energy, they all send a message before you even say a word. So let's break that down. Attitude. Accountability means owning your attitude. Do you bring energy into the room or drain it? Do you show up with solutions or just point out the problems? We all have tough days. That's life in property management. But accountability is choosing how you respond. You can't always control what happens, but you can always control your attitude. Presentation. How you present yourself matters. You don't have to be dressed to the nines every day, but you should look polished, confident, and professional. When you look ready, you feel ready. And when you feel ready, you perform better. Presentation isn't just about clothes either. It's about how you write your emails, how you answer your phone, how you communicate with clients. It's the image you project. People decide if they can trust you within seconds. Make sure what they see and hear says I'm capable, organized, and I care. Energy. Your energy sets the tone. You don't have to be loud or bubbly, but you do need to be intentional. If you're coming in flat, anxious, or distracted, your clients and your team will feel it. Take a minute in the car before you walk in. Set your intention. How do I want to show up today? Energy is contagious. Make yours one that uplifts and not the one that drains. Professional presence. Accountability shows up in your follow-through. If you say you will call someone back, call them back. If you promise an update, deliver it. If you can't meet a deadline, communicate that early. That's what professionalism looks like. And the more consistent you are, the more trust you build, both internally and externally. So ask yourself, what's it like to be on the other side of me? That's a great accountability checkpoint. Let's get practical. Here are some tools and habits that make accountability easier to live, not just talk about. Number one, weekly goals. Every Monday, set three to five goals for the week. Not just survive. Things like follow up every application within 24 hours. Call two owners I haven't spoken to lately. Or review one process that's causing frustration. Write them down and keep them visible. Number two, Friday reflection. End your week with a 10-minute check-in. Ask yourself what worked, what didn't? What did I learn? What will I do differently next week? Reflection builds awareness and awareness creates growth. Number three, create visibility. Accountability grows when it's visible. Share your goals with your leader or your team. Put them in front of your screen, somewhere where you can see every day. Or if you're like me, put them on your Trello card. Once it's out there, it's real. Four, flip the excuses. When you hear yourself say, I didn't have time, change it to, I didn't prioritize it. It's uncomfortable, but it puts the power back in your hands. You can't change what you don't own. Five, reward consistency. Don't wait for perfection to celebrate. Consistency is the goal. Did you show up and give it your best? Great. That's a win. Progress beats perfection every single time. Let's be honest. Some weeks accountability feels heavy. You're tired, over it, maybe even questioning why you do what you do. But those are the moments that matter most. Because accountability isn't about being perfect every day. It's about starting again quickly. If a day goes off track, reset that afternoon. If a week blows out, reset the next morning. You don't have to wait until Monday to start again. You'll drop the ball sometimes. We all do. What counts is that you pick it back up with awareness, not shame. Awareness beats avoidance every time. And here's something else. Accountability gets easier when you build compassion into it. You can be both kind and honest with yourself. It's not, I failed. It's that didn't work, what can I try next time? That's real leadership, and it starts with leading yourself. So here's my challenge for you this week. Pick one small thing your future self will thank you for. Maybe it's reading one chapter of a book that inspires you. Or listening to one podcast about communication and leadership. Maybe it's cleaning up a process that's been bugging you for months. Or blocking 30 minutes every Friday to plan the week ahead. Whatever it is, just do it this week. Because that one small action builds trust with yourself. And self-trust is the foundation of accountability. Small habits done consistently lead to big results. So to wrap it up, here's what I want you to take away. Your leader, your boss, your business, they can support you, guide you, and cheer you on. But your success, your attitude, your standards, they're your responsibility. And that's not a burden, that's power. When you take ownership of your actions, your growth, your presentation, your energy, everything in your career changes. You stopped reacting and you start leading. You stop waiting and start creating momentum. So this week, be your own accountability partner. Set your goals, check in with yourself, show up with intention because your future self, the calm, confident, capable version of you, is being built by the decisions you make today. Thanks for listening, and here's to just being 1% better every week.
